Salt Water Sharks
A Field Guide

The Project
- A field guide inspired by the National Audubon Society Field Guides format, this project was a deep dive into typography and the use of different letters, numbers and glyphs to create shapes and pair them with typeset copy as an introduction to typesetting.
- Each illustration uses a different Sans Serif typeface, including Anisette Standard, Berlin Sans, Burghi, Sharktooth, & Cooper Black. I also designed the page layout and front cover belly band to complete the guide and to place the illustrations in a familiar environment.
- I ran in to obstacles right from the start of the design, as I approached the design by using only letters to create an outline of the illustration, without much of an exploration of all the characters a typeface can offer to create shape. After useful feedback and critique from my peers and instructor, I changed my approach to utilize many of the available characters to fill out a shape which yielded a much more pleasing illustration. In the end, this was one of my favorite projects to work on, and was a great lesson in incorporating critique to push my design to greater heights.
